Top 5 Essential Oils for Relaxation

pine-essential-oil.jpg

I love Hong Kong and this is the city I will always call home, but it’s not an easy metropolitan to cope in when everything goes by so quickly. If you’re like me and often find yourself stressed, anxious or having a hard time to unwind then here are 5 top essential oils to relax your body and balance the mind.

Lavender-Picture-2.jpg

Lavender: Calming and soothing. Affects the cardiovascular system, nervous system, helps with emotional balancing and is great for the skin because of it’s anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and regenerative properties.

Benefits Of Roman Chamomile (Anthemis Nobilis) For Health (1).jpg

Roman Chamomile: Therapeutic calming effect on the skin, mind and body. It’s also said to help one overcome ones negative feelings of disappointment and hopelessness. Promotes serenity in all areas of life.

Vetiver-roots.jpg
Vetiver: Its calming, grounding and stabilizing properties allow it to help with stress relieving. It’s nature’s tranquilizer and helps induce a restful sleep. (I always have this next to my bed stand. But remember this is a strong oil so use one drop first to see how it affects you personally. Apply one drop at a time for added effect.)

Valerian, Common (Valeriana officinalis) Freeholt Wood Sapcote SP 4611 9390 (taken 23.7.2008).JPG

Valerian: Helps with anxiety, stress and depression. Is an ancient oil that calms and relaxes the mind and body. A root based oil that improves the quality of sleep (great for insomnia).

clarysage.jpg

Clary Sage: Calming to the nervous system. Helps balances emotions. Washes away daily tension and gives a sense of mild euphoria. (Also great for relieving menstrual pains)

Suggested ways of application:

Topical: Choose a base oil of choice (eg. coconut oil, jojoba oil or my favorite sweet almond oil) and add 1-2 drops to one pump of base oil, mix and apply to designated area. For stress related purposes, I suggest to apply it over the heart/chest area to clear the heart chakra and on the back of your neck.

Breathe it in: Simply add 1-2 drops to your palm, rub it in to activate the oil and cup your hands over your nose. Inhale deeply 3-5 times.

Diffuser: Add 3-4 drops of essential oil into your 100mL diffuser and let it fill your home or workspace.

Hot compress: Add 1-2 drops of essential with one pump of base oil and apply to desired area. Put a hot towel over that area and enjoy.

Enjoy on the go: Add 10-15 drops of essential oil into a 10mL glass roller bottle and then top off with your choice of base oil. Apply it on the go to your temples, wrists, back of neck or over your heart.

The Right Spot: Hong Kong’s Newest Urban Spa

This rainy weather is giving me the midweek blues. And, when I need an extra hand to get pass hump day I resort in treating myself to delicious comfort food or a good old massage. If you know me well, then you’ll know how obsessed I am with massages. Stanley Street in Lan Kwai Fong is the new home to Hong Kong’s newest urban spa: The Right Spot.

Reception Area.jpgReception Area

The Right Spot opened only a few weeks ago and already has had many great reviews. The interiors are filled with designer furniture (in a minimalistic setting) and an array of artwork by world-class artists hang on the walls and are available for sale. Pieces that are sold will be donated to a charity of the artists choice. For those who are looking for collectors items can also do so at your leisure. The place has a very New York Chic vibe to it. So those of you who’ve lived in New York will feel quite homey here.

A pleasant and calming essential oil aroma fills the air as you walk into the reception area – a blend of bergamot, geranium, lavender and marjoram to be exact. (Yes – that’s the essential oil geek in me coming out). They stock products from the renown Como Shambhala which is under the Como Hotel & Resorts group. The scent that is diffused in the spa is called the “calm” blend which helps uplifts your mood while also washing away your daily impurities and stress. In the private massage rooms they have Penhaligon’s scented candles lit in all which are absolutely heavenly and allows you to relax for your spa experience.

Penhaligon's Scented Candle.jpegPenhaligon‘s Scented Candle

I love getting lathered up in essential oils for my spa journey or getting a really firm massage but this time I opted for the latter because of all the knots and tension in my back. I was eager to see what the individual massage rooms would look like.

IMG_6840.JPG
Minimalistic Massage Room

Each room is lightly dimmed and comes with your own set of Egyptian cotton towels (oh, fancy). That’s not all…

IMG_6841.JPG

Each guest also gets a fresh set of slippers, undies, shorts, headband, #GOT KNOTS shirt and a heated eye pad (thoughful, eh?) to let you really melt into your massage bed and enjoy the experience to the fullest.

Foot Massage Area.jpgFoot Massage Area

I didn’t get a foot massage this time round but it seems like the perfect place for one. Foot massage venues in Hong Kong are normally not very private and can get quite loud because of other patrons. However, The Right Spot strategically placed the seats in between curtains, therefore you can choose to block out everyone else and enjoy your foot massage in peace. Will have to book in a foot massage on my next visit.

Extra Services: If you’re like me and are always on the go, then their extra services may stand out to you as it did to me. They offer gourmet lunch and snacks catered by their F&B partner Locofama. Not only do they offer detox water for those who are wellness fanatics they also have herbal soup (my fave – yum!)

The Verdict: Their team is cordial and very professional. Clean and tidy. Affordable pricing for a luxurious experience. The private rooms are spacious and the foot massage area is spaced out well. The massage was better than I expected – my therapist, Ava, is a petite little lady, but she really hits all THE RIGHT SPOTs! This is the first time I’ve walked out of a massage without tightening up after a few hours. She truly got those knots out for good… well at least for a few days.

Tip #1 Since they are spanking new they are offering opening discounted packages. So book them before the discounts are over!

Tip #2 Which therapist to book? Try Ava! She’s amazing but I heard the other therapists are just as good but has different styles – I guess I’ll have to try them all to see for myself.

Newest Spa in Central: Melomist

Melomist is a new spa in Central located on the slopes of Cochrane Street that launched in early September. This quaint venue stays true to their four fundamental elements: Hygiene, Comfort, Safety & Results. It is equipped with three private rooms for treatments and offers a range of beauty services such as waxing, manicures, pedicures, body massages, facials and body treatments. They even offer services for pre and post natal treatments for those mama to bes out there. That’s not all, they also provide men’s treatments and services for teenagers as well! If you’re planning a girls night in or celebrating a birthday you can call and ask about their Spa Party packages too. (Sounds like a great plan to me!) Check out their menu here.

IMG_6659.JPG

Owner, Jumi Lee, is a certified aromatherapist from the UK who studied beauty science in London College. She opened this spa in hopes to offer an oasis for Hong Kongers to relax and unwind. She trains her therapists to learn all aspects of spa operations to ensure the ultimate customer experience.

I was placed in the first private room closest to the main door. The interior was minimalistic and serene. I opted for the “Melomist Treat” which was a 2 hour long spa treatment that will set you back HK$1,580.

IMG_6656.JPG

My therapist, Pratika, was professional, knowledgable and possessed a pair of magical hands! She started the treatment off with a hot stone massage and paired it with peppermint, arnica and pine massage oil to help release any tension I had in my muscles.

IMG_6657.JPG

The next part of the treatment was the facial, before she started she did a skin analysis to see what type of skin I had before concocting the suitable ingredients for my facial. Melomist stocks a local essential oil skincare brand called Native Essential (aka NE) which is also integrated into a few of their spa treatments. After my skin analysis, my therapist applied NE’s Mulberry and Raspberry cleansing oil to clear my skin of impurities. Then she turned on the steamer and lighted used NE’s Almond Ground Facial Exfoliator to get rid of my dead skin. I have thin and highly sensitive skin therefore after a gentle face scrub my face was already showing blotches of redness. This is when my therapist took out the high frequency machine and ran it all over my face to help my acne prone skin eliminate bacteria and help with any signs of anti-inflammatory.

IMG_6660.JPG

Once my skin calmed, it was time for the anti-aging facial oil massage. This oil blend consisted of Neroli (reduces inflammation, repairs and rejuvenates skin), Frankincense (anti-aging and wrinkle fighter) and Pomegranate (reinvigorates skin and fights against free radicals). I wish there was a device that could record these aromas so that each of you could experience it. But until then, all I can say is that it smells absolutely heavenly!

IMG_6661.JPG

Next step was to purify and heal the skin with the Ivory Clay mixed with lavender hydrosol (means floral water). While the mask was drying, my therapist went back to the massage part (my favorite!) but this time she used Hot Half Gem Moonstones to get out my shoulder knots. I’m a huge fan of massages and let me tell you not many ‘spa therapists’ have firm hands – at least not the ones I have been to. Pratika has extremely firm hands and hit all the sweet spots to get out my tense knots.

IMG_6662.JPG

Finally, all good things must come to an end. Pratika finished off my facial by applying a lavender toner and sealed all the essential oil goodness with a delicate moisturizer that consists of Chamomile (antiseptic and antibacterial), Lavender (calming and helps with dermatitis) and Calendula (healing properties and makes the skin glow).

IMG_6663.JPG

This was THE BEST SPA treatment I had to date. I can’t wait to return and try out all the other treatments and services!

IMG_6664.JPG

Tip #1: If you want to enjoy your treatment in absolute silence request for the treatment rooms at the back when you’re booking.

Tip #2: If you want a firm massage just speak up and tell the therapist how you like it.

Tip #3: Cancel any meetings, gatherings if you’re booking in a treatment as your hair will get a bit oily from all the facials and massage oils. If you do have an appointment after you can use their shower room or pop on home to rinse off. Make sure you allow enough time in between meet ups.

3 Natural Remedies to get rid of Blackheads

Living in Hong Kong, we’re often surrounded by external stress factors such as air pollution, stress, over working and of course over indulging. A friend recently asked me ways to naturally get rid of blackheads – which led me to make write this post! I hope you like it.

How do blackheads manifest?

Blackheads basically form when a pores are clogged or plugged. Dead skins cells, sweat or impurities collect at the opening of the pore and cause them to get clogged which then produces a dirty bump aka blackhead.

Main causes of blackheads

  • Caffeine
  • Alcohol
  • Cigarettes
  • Stress
  • Hormonal changes
  • Cosmetics
  • Unclean skin

Natural remedies to get rid of blackheads

1. Baking Soda Mask or Paste

Simply mix one part baking soda and fresh filtered water to form a paste. Apply gently to the affected area, then allow it to dry for a few minutes and simply rinse it off with warm water to remove the oil and dirt from your pores. Make sure not to over do it either as the baking soda pH is high and can seriously dry out your skin so don’t forget to moisturize after!

2. Egg White Mask

Egg white removes current blackheads, tightens your pores which prevents future blackheads to form as well.

Ingredients:
– 1 egg
– Small bowl
– Clean towel
– Tissue

Simply separate the egg yolk from the egg white and keep the latter. Clean your face and then pat dry. Apply a layer of egg white to your skin, wait until it’s completely dry and then apply another layer. Repeat 4-5 times. Let it dry completely then rinse with warm water.

3. Honey & Cinnamon Pads (smells divine!)

Ingredients:
– Clean cotton pads
– 1 part organic raw honey
– 1 part cinnamon
– Small bowl

Mix the honey and cinnamon in a small bowl until it’s enough to cover the affected area. Apply a thin layer onto affected area then press a clean cotton pad over it. Wait for 4-5 minutes then remove slowly and rinse your face. Follow up with a mild unscented moisturizer (best if it’s chemical free so it doesn’t irritate your skin).

DIY Natural Makeup Remover

Every day we are in contact with chemicals and toxic substances. Have you ever thought of how much of that gets in contact with your skin and gets absorbed by your pores? It’s very damaging to your skin and your body in the long run. It’s easy to take small steps towards a chemical free lifestyle.

Here is a great recipe for making DIY natural makeup remover.

IMG_4390.JPG

What you will need:
• Mason jar
• Measuring spoons
• Cotton pads
• Filtered water
• Witch hazel (you can purchase them at Just Green or online at iHerb)
• Essential oil of your choice (I chose Lavender for its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. It’s also a very gentle essential oil and if perfect to relax to when applied to the skin.)
• Carrier oil of your choice (I like to use V-6 or sweet almond oil because it doesn’t clog pores and leaves your skin feeling healthy and supple. You can check out the 5 benefits of Sweet Almond Oil here. Other carrier oils you can opt for include but are not limited to coconut oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, avocado seed oil and more.)

Once you have all your ingredients ready follow the steps below:
1. Pour 2 tablespoons of your choice of carrier oil into the mason jar
2. Pour 1 tablespoon of Witch Hazel
3. Pour 2 tablespoons of filtered water
4. Add 4 drops of your choice of essential oil (I chose Lavender)
5. Place the cotton pads into the mason jar
6. Close the cap and swirl the jar until all the cotton pads are evenly soaked

IMG_4393.JPG

You can now enjoy the DIY natural makeup remover whenever you want! When you’re finished with this batch, try another recipe with a different essential oil and feel the difference. I like switching it up with Geranium.

Thann Spa: A 5-star Experience

Thann Spa

IMG_4415.JPG

IMG_4414.JPG
Waiting area at Thann Spa

We all like to get away from the city sometimes and if you’re one of those who need a break then Thann Spa is a great choice for you. Although it’s situated in the bustling street of Canton Road, you can rest assured that the Thann Spa ambiance is comfortably relaxing and zen. Once you arrive you’re greeted by the friendly staff and offered a soothing herbal tea and a fresh towel scented with essential oils to unwind. Once you’re ready for your treatment the therapist will present you with a selection of different essential oils that you can choose for your treatment.

IMG_4416.JPGFrom left to right: Eden Breeze, Lavender & Rosemary, Aromatic Wood, Oriental Essence

I choose the Lavender & Rosemary oil along with my Abhyanga (Ayurvedic Body Massage) which is 75 minutes long and will set you back HK$1,200. This 60 Minute light/medium/or firm massage is based on traditional Indian Ayurvedic concepts which utilize friction, kneading, rubbing and marma (vital energy points) massage to help bring the body to its natural state. These movements combined with warm THANN Bath & Massage Oil (scent of your choice) followed by a 15 Minute steam will help to release Ama (toxins), improve Agni (digestive fire) as well as relieve stress and tension.

There are a few private rooms for guests to choose from. I entered the treatment room and was pleasantly surprised at the size of the space. It was fully equipped with a steam room, extensive toiletry tray and a big comfy treatment bed. I was treated with an epsom salt foot scrub before my session started. After that I was ready for my treatment!

IMG_4418.JPG
Feel free to use any of these after your treatment!

My therapist was attentive and always made sure I felt comfortable throughout the massage. I personally like hard massages as I have millions of knots in my neck, shoulder and back. I told my therapist to work on these areas and she hit all the right spots. I rarely fall asleep during my treatments but this was a deep tissue massage with essential oils. It must’ve been the essential oils because I fell asleep 30 minutes into the treatment. My therapist had to lightly tap me on the shoulder to wake me up.

IMG_4420.JPG
Spa Room

After my treatment I had a 15-minute steam room session. It was very relaxing and left me feeling a lot lighter, definitely stress free. As I finished my treatment, I was served fruits at the waiting room before I left. I felt like royalty. I’ve only had this type of treatment in spas I’ve been to in Thailand. This may be one of my new local favorite spas! I’ll definitely be back to try out all the other treatments.
